Cancun's Parque Kabah and the blocks around it
Cancun, Mexiko

Parque Kabah is 41 hectares of low Yucatán jungle inside the city, its trails marked with painted distance posts every 100 m. The gates open at 06:00 and entry is free. 200,000 people walked it in 2025.

Parque Ecológico Estatal Kabah (Av. Kabah and Av. Nichupté) is state-protected and free to enter, open 06:00 to 18:00 daily, and signed in places as Parque Urbano Kabah. It has two gated entrances, one on Av. Kabah and one on Av. Nichupté, and both have car parks. Go at opening, while the air is still cool.

The trails are packed reddish dirt running past wooden interpretive totems and thatched palapas set in the clearings. Coatis cross the path, turtles bask at the La Aguada pond, iguanas sit out on the warm ground, and more than 60 resident and migratory bird species live inside the fence. The park is a declared RIOBIC biodiversity research node.

Work on a new play area runs through 2026, with totem and palapa repairs alongside it, so expect some fenced-off patches on the day you walk. The park office arranges guided visits.

Museo Casa Maya, five minutes off the main trail

Museo Casa Maya (inside Parque Kabah) is a Maya thatched house that was dismantled, moved here in 1993 and opened as a museum in 1998. A straw roof covers whitewashed masonry walls. The two rooms inside are tiny, hung with black-and-white photographs of Cancún when it was bare sand and survey stakes.

Outside the house, a recreated chiclero camp and a solar maya yard fill the ground. Entry is $50 and you can ask for a guide at the door. Nothing else in the city shows as plainly how recently Cancún was built, and the detour off the main trail takes five minutes.

Planetario de Cancún Ka'Yok', Cancun

Planetario de Cancún Ka'Yok' (Av. Palenque, SM 21) is immediately beside the park on a quiet side street, with the jungle edge behind it. The dome theatre seats 95 under a reclining star projection, Mexico's first fifth-generation dome, and a separate 16-inch telescope observatory dome sits on the roof. Foreign visitors pay $90 adult and $60 child; residents pay $30 and $25. The Museo del Agua Ch'ooj K'uun is included in the same ticket.

Show times are fixed and block bookings go through the phone line. It closes Sundays. Go on a weekday, in the hours when the heat pushes you indoors.

Casa de la Cultura de Cancún (Prolongación Yaxchilán, SM 21) is on the same block as the park and the planetarium, a low white municipal arts building run by Quintana Roo's culture institute. The courtyard is free to walk into, with mural walls, a small library and a cafeteria off it, and hand-made posters taped to the glass doors. Most exhibitions and workshops are free or low-cost, and the larger concerts are ticketed. The courtyard board lists the free recitals.

It opens Monday to Friday 08:30 to 21:00 and Saturday 09:00 to 14:00, and closes Sundays.

Two stadiums on Av. Kabah

Estadio Sherwin-Williams Beto Ávila (Av. Kabah) is across the avenue from the park's east gate, its floodlight pylons rising straight out of the tree line opposite. The Tigres de Quintana Roo of the Mexican League play here, in an open-air concrete grandstand for 10,285 with orange-and-black seatbacks. The season runs April to August. Tickets are cheap and sold in general-admission blocks ($$), and vendors work the aisles through the game. The sponsor prefix is new; ask for el Beto Ávila and anyone will point you to it.

Estadio Olímpico Andrés Quintana Roo (Av. Mayapán, Av. Kabah and Av. de la Luna junction) is minutes from the park gate, a shallow bowl for 19,000 with a red athletics track ringing the pitch. Cancún FC play Liga BBVA Expansión MX here, Pioneros share the ground, and concerts use it too. Ticketing is open, and the club shop opens Monday to Friday 10:00 to 17:00 and Saturday 10:00 to 14:00. It is the loudest and cheapest night out within walking distance of the park ($$).

Breakfast and coffee before the walk

Café, Por Favor (Av. Labná, SM 20) opens at 07:30 Monday to Saturday and roasts only Mexican beans from small growers, which is rare locally. Cold brew runs on tap, avocado toast and banana bread come out of the kitchen, and a co-working counter is lined with power sockets. The corner room is small and fills around 09:00, so arrive at opening ($).

El Huerto del Edén (Av. Yaxchilán, between Av. Kabah and Av. Bacalar) is on the park's northern corner and opens every day 07:00 to 18:00. The dining room is a plant-filled garden. Tortillas are hand-pressed, and squash-blossom quesadillas and sunflower-seed cheese arrive on clay plates. It is the strongest vegetarian and vegan kitchen near the park. The doors shut at 18:00, which makes it a breakfast or a lunch ($–$$).

Lunch across the park fence

Mu. Burgerhouse Nichupté, Cancun
Mu. Burgerhouse Nichupté, Cancun

Mu. Burgerhouse Nichupté (Av. Nichupté, facing the park fence) gives its own address as frente al Parque Kabah. Patties are smashed on an open griddle counter under cow-print black-and-white branding, craft beer comes by the bottle, and gluten-free buns are available. Delivery orders take the kitchen at peak, so book ahead for six or more ($$).

Los De Pescado (Av. Tulum, SM 20) has been the fish-taco benchmark in Cancún Centro for more than 17 years. Battered tacos are stacked in plastic baskets, you dress them at a self-serve salsa and cabbage bar, and you eat at a tiled counter on plastic stools. A taco is $60 and a full meal runs $180 to $350 a head. The counter opens 10:00 to 17:30, a kilometre off the park. Service is first-come and a party of ten will be standing.

Dinner on Av. Nichupté and Av. Xpuhil Sur

El Timón de Cancún, Cancun
El Timón de Cancún, Cancun

El Timón de Cancún (Av. Nichupté) is the seafood house Cancún families use, 33 years in trade, a short run up Av. Nichupté from the park. Whole fish come fried on oval platters in a nautical blue-and-white room under a ship's-wheel motif, shrimp tacos sit on the same menu, and vegetarian and vegan dishes are flagged. A fenced children's play area opens off the terrace. It opens 12:00 to 22:00 seven days and has its own car park ($$).

La Palapita La Luna (Plaza Urbana La Luna, Av. Nichupté at Av. de la Luna) is a few hundred metres off the park's Nichupté side, a palm-thatch palapa roof over long wooden family tables. Trays of ceviche come out to them, and a live trio sets up under the rafters Wednesday to Sunday at 21:00. Check which branch you are heading for before you set off: the same group's Av. Kabah SM 248 site is a long drive north ($$).

Marakame (Av. Xpuhil Sur, near Plaza Pabellón Caribe) is the dinner worth a short ride out, a treehouse-like terrace of wood, wicker and thatch woven around living trees and strung with warm lights. The terrace seats 100, and private sections cost nothing extra. Doors are open 09:15 to 01:00, and Sunday brunch is a buffet with live guitar. Book a table. Samura next door is under the same ownership, so the two work as one stop ($$–$$$).

Beer when the stadiums empty

El Estadio Cervecería & Restaurant (Av. Kabah at Av. de la Luna, SM 21) is the nearest proper drinking venue to the park, a recently refurbished corner hall with a long wall of Mexican craft taps, screens over the bar and chilli-rimmed michelada schooners the size of fishbowls. Locals recommend it for the micheladas. Long tables, no dress code, and it is busiest on match nights. Drink here and eat elsewhere; the beer list is the draw and the kitchen is the weaker half ($$).

Where to stay

KABAH Cancun Hotel Boutique, Cancun
KABAH Cancun Hotel Boutique, Cancun

KABAH Cancun Hotel Boutique (Av. Kabah) is a three-minute walk from the park gate and the nearest bed to it by some margin. The block is small and whitewashed, on a tree-lined stretch of the avenue, with balconies on every room, a compact rooftop terrace and a courtyard pool. Parking is free and continental breakfast is free from 08:00 to 10:00. Guests flag lift, air-conditioning and housekeeping lapses, so ask to see the room before you take it ($$).

Grand City Hotel Cancun (Av. Yaxchilán, SM 20) is 1.5 km from Parque Kabah and nine minutes' walk from Mercado 28, a mid-rise with a small outdoor pool deck and a generous breakfast buffet room. Airport shuttle arrangements run from the door. From here the park, the stadiums and the city centre are all on foot or one short ride. Parque de las Palapas is 2.3 km east and Plaza Las Américas 2.25 km, and the lagoon-side Malecón Tajamar promenade is 3 km away. All three are worth an evening, though none of them is in this part of the city ($$).

Planning notes

The planetarium and the Casa de la Cultura both close Sundays, which leaves Sunday for the park, the Marakame brunch and the 21:00 trio at La Palapita La Luna. Reserve at Marakame, ask for a guide at the Casa Maya door, and check the park fencing at the gate before you plan a long loop.
