Drive your own speedboat from Cancun's mangroves to the reef
Cancun, Mexique

At Km 14.6, rows of small white two-seater fibreglass speedboats sit tied along a low wooden dock behind a lagoon-side car park, a solid green mangrove wall across the water. You drive one of them yourself, for two hours. Nobody swims in the lagoon.

What the two hours on the water involve

The run has two halves. The first goes into Laguna Nichupté (Área de Protección de Flora y Fauna Manglares de Nichupté), a 34 km² CONANP-protected lagoon, where narrow channels cut through tunnels of dense green mangrove and the water sits tea-coloured and still. Boats go in as a convoy behind the lead guide, and the tunnels are closed to unguided boats and paddlers. Herons stand on exposed stilt roots, and the hotel towers stay on the far horizon. There are crocodiles in the lagoon.

Then the boats cross to the Punta Nizuc reef (Parque Nacional Costa Occidental de Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancún y Punta Nizuc), where the water runs 3 to 8 m deep over low brain and sea-fan coral heads. Dense shoals of yellow-and-black sergeant majors hold over the coral. Snorkellers go in wearing orange flotation vests and follow a guide line in a strung-out row. The water is calm and shallow, with turtles and eagle rays on a good day. Nobody reaches this reef from land, because the shoreline belongs to the resorts; the only way in is a boat with a park-permitted operator, and every boat charges the national-park bracelet on top of its dock fee.

The two-hour docks at Km 14.1 and Km 14.6

Marina Jungle Tour Adventure (Km 14.6, lagoon side) is the plainest version of the trip, and the one most people have in mind. Departures are 09:00, 12:00 and 15:00, two hours each, and you drive. A place on a shared boat is 820 MXN per person, plus 360 MXN in cash for the marine-park and dock fee on the day. Boats are two-up, three at most, and the tour caps at 50 people, so a party gets split across several boats on the same departure. A shared boat needs a minimum of two people. Drivers must be 18 and carry photo ID.

Jungle Tour Barracuda (Marina Puerto Madero, Km 14.1) sells from a palapa-roofed ticket shack, its speedboats on a floating dock with the glass Kempinski tower rising across the boulevard. It is the longest-running jungle tour on the lagoon, and the only operator that will put three people in one boat. A shared place is 820 MXN per person; a boat to yourself is 1,460 MXN. The park fee is collected separately at the dock. Children aged 4 to 11 pay the adult rate, under-3s go free, and private 8-seat boats take bigger parties. It runs every day except 25 December and 1 January.

Aquaworld at Km 15.2 and the Maya ceremony at Km 16.3

Aquaworld Cancún (Km 15.2, lagoon side) is the biggest marina on Nichupté, a blue-and-white complex with long concrete piers, catamarans and a glass-bottom Sub See Explorer moored alongside the speedboat rows. Jungle-tour departures are 09:00, 12:00 and 14:30, at 1,100 to 1,300 MXN per person, plus 360 MXN in dock and park fees at the marina. Several reef trips leave from these piers, so a dive or the submarine can be added from the same dock. With that many departures a day, this is the easiest marina for a large group that wants everyone on the water the same morning.

Puerto Maya Cancún (Km 16.3) has a thatched Maya-style gateway, carved stelae and copal smoke in front of its lagoon dock. The trip here runs three hours and wraps the speedboat drive and the reef snorkel in a Maya ritual and a snack, at 1,100 to 1,500 MXN per person with the cultural show, plus a dock fee paid at the booth. Minimum age is 6. The operator reserves the right to split a large party across boats, or to move it to another departure slot. Take a plain two-hour run from another marina if the ceremony does not appeal.

Marina Aquatours at Km 6.5

Marina Aquatours (Km 6.5) is the closest jungle-tour marina to downtown Cancún, with white speedboats and double-deck catamarans moored together and Playa Tortugas and the boulevard across the strip. Departures are staggered through the day: 08:30, 11:00, 13:30 and 16:00. A place is 900 to 1,200 MXN per person, plus the separate dock and marine-park fee. The lagoon leg is longer from here. Book this one if the driving is the part you came for, or if you are staying at the north end of the strip.

MUSA Museo Subacuático de Arte (Punta Nizuc gallery, marina at Km 15.3) has grey concrete human figures standing upright on white sand 4 to 8 m down, encrusted with coral and algae, a sculpted VW Beetle among them and shafts of sunlight across the group. Departures are fixed at 10:00 and 12:00. Entry is 1,050 MXN per adult and 620 MXN for ages 4 to 11, with 270 MXN in dock and park fees at reception. The shallow Nizuc half of the museum is snorkellable; the deep Manchones gallery is not. Minimum age is 4, the upper limit is 65, and pregnant passengers are not carried. Add it to the day if the two-hour speedboat run leaves you wanting more time in the water.

Booking and the rules on the water

The jungle tours run seven days a week, and the boats book up steadily, so book ahead rather than walking up to a dock. The marine-park and dock fee sits outside the boat price everywhere and is collected on the day. Bring biodegradable sunscreen only, and do not touch anything on the reef.

Best time to go

Visibility at the reef is best from March to June, and clearest between 08:00 and 11:00. Take the first departure your marina offers. A midday or afternoon slot still gives you the mangrove channels and the same two hours at the wheel.

Is it worth it

It suits a visitor who wants to drive the boat and take a shallow, calm snorkel at the halfway point. You need to be 18 with photo ID to take the wheel, and you share the departure with as many as 50 people spread across the boats. For a longer, slower swim, the Nizuc sculpture gallery puts more time in the water than the two-hour run does.

A dry afternoon across the boulevard

Museo Maya de Cancún y Zona Arqueológica de San Miguelito, Cancun
Museo Maya de Cancún y Zona Arqueológica de San Miguelito, Cancun

Museo Maya de Cancún y Zona Arqueológica de San Miguelito sits directly across the boulevard from the Km 16 marinas, an elevated white modernist concrete block raised on piers above the dune. A sandy jungle path runs below it past low Maya house platforms and a small pyramid. It opens Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00 to 18:00, with last gallery entry at 17:00 and the ruins closing at 16:30. Entry is 210 MXN for foreign visitors and 105 MXN for Mexican nationals; under-13s and over-60s go free, and Sundays are free for nationals and residents. No booking is needed, and large parties walk in.

Zona Arqueológica El Rey is the least-visited site on the strip: two parallel rows of low limestone platforms and one small stepped pyramid on open ground, with large grey-green iguanas basking on the stone in full sun. It opens daily 08:00 to 17:00 at 75 MXN, free on Sundays for Mexican nationals and resident foreigners. The site reopened in July 2025 after refurbishment and now has toilets and lockers. No guide is required. Go early or late, because the ground has almost no shade.

Playa Delfines (El Mirador) is 2 km from the Km 16 marinas and the strip's only viewpoint: giant multicoloured CANCÚN letters on a clifftop lookout above a wide white beach, with open-Caribbean surf breaking in long lines and palapa shades on the sand. It is free and open 24 hours, parking included. The free car park beside the lookout fills by mid-morning at weekends, and the palapas are first come, first served. The surf is rough and the beach catches the worst of the sargassum, so photograph it and swim elsewhere. Bring your own water, as nothing is sold on site.

Playa Coral (Mirador II) is the nearest public sand to the Punta Nizuc reef, a small quiet cove at the far southern end of the strip with wooden palapas on pale sand and shallow turquoise water. Access and parking are free, and there are lifeguards and toilets. It is Blue Flag certified for 2025-2026 and the only beach in Cancún that takes dogs, on a lead at the shoreline. Nothing is sold here either. The swimming is shallow and slow, the opposite of the speedboat.

Eating on the lagoon

Fred's (Km 14.5) sits on the lagoon frontage that the speedboat docks sit behind, which makes it the landmark to steer for when you are hunting the marina. It has a dark-timber dining deck, an ice-packed seafood display and a raw bar, with sunset light across Nichupté and the mangrove line beyond. It opens daily 12:00 to midnight and runs 900 to 2,000 MXN a head with drinks. Book ahead for the waterfront deck at sunset.

Captain's Cove (Km 16.5) has been running since 1986, a two-storey timber galleon-style building on the lagoon shore with an open waterfront deck strung with lights, facing the white Maya museum across the boulevard. Air-conditioned rooms sit behind the deck. Expect 700 to 1,500 MXN a head. Book for sunset, and pair a midday departure from the Km 16 marinas with lunch here.

Lorenzillo's (Km 10.5) is a round thatched palapa built on timber piles out over the lagoon, reached by a long wooden causeway from the road, with a live lobster tank at the entrance. It opens daily 13:00 to midnight at 1,200 to 2,500 MXN a head, lobster by weight. Reserve a table on the water side. Book this one for dinner if the speedboat day is the centre of the trip.

Río Nizuc (Km 22.5, by the Nizuc bridge) is the local, unpolished end of the lagoon, where it drains to the sea near Punta Nizuc: an open-sided palapa on the river mouth, plastic chairs at the water's edge, small boats sliding past the tables. It opens daily 12:00 to 18:00 and serves ceviche, whole fish and beer at 250 to 500 MXN a head, at long shared tables. This is the best-value seafood on the strip, and lunch is the only meal.

Closed days and what to book

The Maya museum and its ruins close on Mondays, and the Km 14.1 operator is shut on 25 December and 1 January. Book the boat before you arrive, and reserve a sunset table on the water if you want one. See the Cancun guide and the Cancun hotel search.

Avant de partir

Do you really drive the speedboat yourself?

Yes, you take the wheel for the two-hour run. Boats seat two, or three at most, and drivers at Marina Jungle Tour Adventure must be 18 and carry photo ID.

How many people fit in one boat?

Two, or three at most. Jungle Tour Barracuda is the only operator that will put three in a boat, and it also runs private 8-seat boats for bigger parties. A tour caps at 50 people, so the operator splits a large group across several boats on the same departure.

Can you swim in Laguna Nichupté?

No. The lagoon is a CONANP-protected mangrove system with a real crocodile population, and the tunnels are off limits to unguided boats and paddlers. You snorkel out at the Punta Nizuc reef instead.

What do you pay on top of the boat ticket?

A marine-park and dock fee, separate from the boat price and collected on the day. It is 360 MXN at the Km 14 docks and at Aquaworld Cancún, and you pay it in cash at Marina Jungle Tour Adventure. Puerto Maya Cancún collects its dock fee at the booth.

What time of day gives the best snorkelling?

Visibility at Punta Nizuc is clearest between 08:00 and 11:00, and best from March to June, so take the first departure of the day: 08:30 at Marina Aquatours, 09:00 at Marina Jungle Tour Adventure and Aquaworld Cancún.
